You’re No Good…

Standard

In this life, the road we travel should be Beautiful!

In this time of recession, depression, and lack of funding, are we telling our children that they are no good?  Never-ending budget cuts in education would seem to say so.  In times when things are so hard for so many people, budget cuts to education only make matters worse.   Putting more financial responsibility on the families who can not afford it doesn’t make sense.  I’m not speaking for everyone but I could do without flowers and plants in our parks and roadways, this country would still be beautiful.  Perhaps we could stop doing ridiculous studies that do not help the general population, I don’t need a study to know that traffic jams are actually caused by traffic or that wearing clothes will keep you warm.  Stop wasting time and money fighting against marijuana, just increase the tax revenues by legalizing it!  Regardless of controversy, save time and money, just legalize same-sex marriage, those who oppose it can still sit in judgement.

Education is the future of this and every other country.  Why would anyone want to remain a teacher with this kind of attack on their profession, oh yea, I know why – because there aren’t any other jobs available!  The best education and the availability of the arts in school are children’s basic human rights.  If we paid teachers as if they were baby-sitters, they would make more money than they do teaching.  Why would any teacher or prospective future candidates want to stay/go into this profession…why not study that!

In the words of today’s song, we are basically telling the future of our country “You’re No Good” and that is just plain wrong!  Our future depends on them…

The rant is over, have a ROCKIN’ day, Mama

Today in ROCK history: 1975 – Linda Ronstadt’s “You’re No Good” is #1.

Stoners and Jocks and Geeks…Oh My! Add a little Frankenstein…

Standard

Remembering back to when my older brother was in High School, there were groups of students that fell into different categories (as there always has been and will be.)  There were the Frats, the Pits and I’m sure the Geeks. My brother was a Frat…kinda clean cut, into music, basketball and girls.  The Pits were more like the Greasers of the 50’s, slicked back hair, comb in back pocket, tough guys.  The Geeks, well no need to explain!

Then, when I went to H.S., there were the Stoners, the Jocks and the Geeks…well I wasn’t a Geek and I didn’t play sports.  I only participated in the classes that I enjoyed and I ditched a lot.  Still got decent enough grades, but really didn’t try.

Now, why the trip down memory lane?  My husband is a H.S. Language Arts teacher (use to just be English when I went to school.)  This is his third year in education.  So I feel like I’m back in school again and I realize that by not putting any effort into my education, I missed out on a lot.  Since I love to read, I have decided to try and read all of his assigned reading.  Now I have to mention that he teaches Freshman L.A., Sophomore L.A. and AP Lit…so there is a ton of stuff to read.  Like I mentioned, I love to read so I am also reading for pleasure at the same time.  Currently I am reading Frankenstein and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.  Reading most of the assigned books makes me realize that I did miss a lot of excellent reading back then.  I have to say that I did read back then, just my own choices.  Nobody was gonna tell me what I had to read!

Besides reading, I have also begun to write, I started with poetry, which if you have read my previous blogs you would know that I recently lost all my computer files to a vicious virus.  Seven months worth of poetry gone!  I am also writing a story, trying my hand at a novel, I was able to save that file at the last-minute. I have a hard copy, but would have hated to retype 67 pages.

Now as if that is not enough, I have also decided that I would like to draw.  Haven’t drawn since I was a kid and doodled cartoon characters: Snoopy, The wizard of Id, Top Cat.  I did my third sketch yesterday, I try to write a poem or journal entry to go with my drawings, this time I wrote the poem first, the night before and then the drawing.  I don’t think it is too bad for a beginner but I know it could be much better.

I am also teaching myself to quilt and am currently working on my blocks.  This will be a much slower process as I can’t sit at the sewing machine forvery long.  I hope to have it done before summer. This first one is a 54″ by 72″ Classic Rock quilt.  Didn’t want to start too big until I knew what I was in for.

I hope you all have a full and ROCKIN’ day, Mama
